Children Dentistry

Childern’s teeth begin forming before birth. As early as 4 months, the first primary teeth to eruot are the lower central incisors, followed by the upper central incisors. All 20 primary teeth usually appear by age 3, the pace and order of their eruption varies. Permanent teeth eruption takes place between age 6 till approximately age 21. Adults have 28 permanent teeth, or up to 32 including the wisdom teeth.

Dental Emergencies in Children:

Toothache:

Clean the area of the affected tooth. Rinse the mouth thoroughly with luke warm water or use dental flors to dislodge any food particles that may be impacted. If pain still exists, contact us. We have special child dentist, who will take care of the problem efficiently. If the face is swollen, apply cold compresses and contact us immediately.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek:

Apply ice to injured areas to help control swelling. If there is bleeding apply cloth or guage with gentle pressure. If still bleeding doesn’t stop contact us or visit us.

Knocked out permanent Tooth:

If possible, find the tooth hold it by the crown not by the root. You may rinse the tooth with water only. Do not clean with soap, scrub or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is sound, try to reinsert in the socket. Now, hold the tooth in place by biting on a clean cloth or a guage. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup containing milk or the patient’s saliva, not water. Visit us immediately with the tooth. Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.

Knocked out Milk Tooth:

Contact us. Milk tooth should not be replanted like permanent tooth because it can damage the developing permanent tooth. Mostly, no treatment required.

Clipped/Fractured Permanent tooth:

Time is a critical factor, contact us immediately so as to reduce the chance for infection or the need for any extensive dental procedure in the future. Clean that area with water and apply cold compression to reduce swelling. If possible find the broken tooth piece, bring it to us.

Chipped / Fractured Primary Tooth:

Contact us. It might requires simple tooth colored filling, Root canal therapy or extraction of that tooth depends upon the severity of the facture.

Thumb Sucking:

Sucking is a natural reflex and infants and young children may use thumbs, fingers, pacifiers and other objects on which to suck. It may make them feel secure and happy, since thumb sucking is relaxing, it may induce sleep.

Thumb sucking habit that remains even after eruption of permanent teeth can cause problems with proper growth of the mouth and tooth alignment. Children who passively rest their thumbs in their mouths are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs.

Children should stop thumb sucking by the time their permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. Usually children stop between 2 to 4 years of age. Peer pressure makes many school aged children to stop thumb sucking.

Pacifier can affect the teeth essentially the same way as sucking fingers and thumbs. Pacifiers are not substitutes for thumb sucking. If you have concerns about thumb sucking or use of pacifiers, consult us. We have in house pedodontist (speciality of child dentistry). Who will answer your all doubts.

Few suggestions to help your child get through thumb sucking:

Focus on correcting the cause of anxiety of your child instead of the thumb sucking habit.

Children who are sucking for comfort will feel less of a need when their parents provide comfort.

Reward a gift to your child when they refrain from sucking during difficult periods, such as when being separated from their parents.

If these approaches don’t work, remind the children of their habit by bandaging the thumb at night. We recommend you to visit us so that we can provide your child a mouth appliance to help in getting rid of thumb sucking habit.

Pulp Therapy in Children:

Pulp is the inner portion of a tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue and reparative cells. The purpose of pulp therapy in children is to maintain the function of the affected tooth (so that the tooth is not lost).

Dental caries (cavities) and traumatic injury are the main reasons for a tooth to require any pulp therapy. Pulp therapy are also known as “nerve treatment”, “children’s root canal”, “pulpectory” or ”pulpotovy”. The two common forms of pulp therapy in children’s teeth are the pulpotory and pulpectory.

A pulpotory treatment means to remove the diseased pulp tissue within the crown portion of the tooth. Then a material is placed to prevent bacterial infection and to calm the remaining nerve tissue. After that final restoration is done (usually a stainless steel crown).

A pulpectory treatment is required when the entire pulp is involved, also the root canals of the tooth. During this treatment, the diseased pulp tissue is completely removed from both the crown and root. The canals are disinfected and in case of primary teeth filled with a reasonable material. Then a final restoration is placed. A permanent tooth is filled with a non-resorbable material (Gutta Percha)

The Best Time For Orthodontic Treatment:

Developing malocelusions, or bad bites, can be recognized as early as 2-3 years of age. Often, early steps can be taken to avoid any major orthodontic treatment in future.

Stage 1 – Early Treatment:

This period of treatment covers ages 2 to 6 years. At this age we see under developed dental arches, the premature loss of primary teeth, and harmful habit such as thumb sucking. Treatment started at this stage is often successful and can eliminate the need for further orthodontic/orthopedic treatment (though not always).

Stage 2 – Mixed Dentition:

This period covers the ages of 6 to 12 years, with the eruption of the permanent incisor teeth and 6 years. Treatment at this stage deal with jaw and relationship and dental realignment problems. This is an excellent stage to start treatment, when needed.

Stage 3 – Adolescent Devtition:

This stage deals with the permanent teeth and the development of the final bite relationship.

What is periodontium?

It is the specialized tissues that both surround & support the teeth, maintaining them in the boxillary & mundibuter bones. It provides the support necessary to maintain teeth in function.

Periodontal disease:

Periodontal or gum disease is a pathological inflammatory condition of gum & bone support ( periodontal condition) surrounding teeth most common periodontal disease are:

Gingivitis:Inflammation of gum at the neck of teeth.
